INDIANAPOLIS – Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, a cemetery serving Northern Marion and Southern Hamilton counties in Indianapolis, will break ground May 7 for a new multi-purpose event center and office building, according to a news release. The cemetery is located at 9700 Allisonville Road.
The building, designed by AXIS Architecture of Indianapolis, will feature space for office, memorial and community events.
The new building will replace the existing office which was constructed when the cemetery was established in 1954. Oaklawn was purchased by Washington Park Cemetery Association in 1982 and currently encompasses 96 acres.
Oaklawn offers ground burial, above-ground crypts, cremation memorials and private family mausoleums. Additionally, there is a Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Center located on the grounds in the Good Shepherd Chapel.
Also on the grounds is the Behner Brook Cremation Garden that opened last year and offers memorial cremation rocks customized to honor loved ones.
The Washington Park Cemetery Association is an Indiana not-for-profit organization with seven cemeteries located in the Greater Indianapolis area. It is dedicated to providing both casket and cremation burial to meet the celebratory needs of area residents.
